Pipd's Peeps!

So, I may have neglected to post some pictures yesterday... But to be fair, I was mesmerized by the cuteness and away from the computer a lot. :love Here are the peepers yesterday:

Six just about did me in with the cuteness here. :love :love

And just one picture from today (so far, anyway :D ). They've made a total mess of the brooder already. And, of course, there has to be that one that does things differently than everyone else.

In other news, I woke up to this... :th:barnie

And since the girls don't like to walk through the white lava, that made the morning chores a lot faster, leaving me plenty of time to make fried apple eierkuchen for breakfast this morning. :drool

Editing to add more peeper pictures! :love First, a close up of Quatre's face. I love how her face is patterned, so I'm glad I got such a clear shot of it. :love :love

She's also a bit of an attention hog. She hops right up into my hand and even shoves her siblings out of the way to do so!

Last (for now) is of Trois and Deux in my lap, but Deux really stole the show here. :love

The kiddos have fully graduated to shavings (AKA I finally got around to taking the towels out of the brooder  ) and they seem sturdy enough not to drown or chill themselves in the waterer at this point, so I took the marbles out to boot! Goodness, I think these guys have grown overnight! I swear, they were teeny-tiny just yesterday and now they're... well, still teeny-tiny in the grand scheme, but they seem bigger to me! :p

Still adorable, though. :love

In other news, out in the coop, Lydda's trying some new styles with her tail. This is what happens when big ol' long Dorking tail feathers are attached to a fussy nester who breaks them against the walls of the nest box.

The girls have been freaking out regularly and for no apparent reason for the past week or two, which has had me a bit on edge and checking on them frequently after the mink attack around this time last year. Well, this morning I may have spotted why they've been freaking out. There was a small, black-and-white cat lurking around the side yard when I looked out the window this morning. I have my doubts that any of my birds are at large risk of predation by this cat, but cats seem to freak them out regardless of size or threat level. Anyway, here's hoping that's all there is that's alarming them out there. :fl

More peeper pictures from a few hours ago! :love They've had a traumatic evening as I tried to get them to go to bed on their own in preparation for next week. They seem quite imprinted, which has never happened to me before with chicks. I've had babies that are super sweet and cuddly, but never ones that wailed for me as it became dark, or that would not go under the EcoGlow on their own, or that would rather pile in the corner closest to me than go to where it's warm. What a set! I think I've figured out the trick to getting them to the EcoGlow on the two nights a week that I'll be away later in the evening, though, so hopefully they will be fine next week. :fl

Anyway, those pictures I mentioned! They were giving me lots of funny (and adorable :love ) looks today!

I wish this one was better focused! What an attitude! (Looking at that comb already, though, maybe the attitude is foreshadowing...)

And when they aren't making maniacs of themselves, they're piled in the corner waiting on my attention.

They've started trying to fly into my lap, but aren't quite springy enough to make it. So, I helped them out. :love

As we're approaching the end of spring break, I probably should get back to studying and literature collecting more dedicatedly over the weekend, so I'm not likely going to be as active from here on out. :hmm I'll try to check in with the peepers every weekend, though, if only to keep logging their growth! :) As it is, I'm bushed--Good night, y'all!

Ahhhh, new chicks! So exciting! Love the pics, they are so cute. What breed are they?Hope all has been well with you, I've been away from this site for a while and I have not been keeping up on this thread.

Hi, Shadow Rabbit! :frow How's the semester going for you?

These are babies from crossing my golden-colored Black Copper Marans rooster, Murphy, to my properly colored Black Copper Marans hen, Nadine. I'm hoping they will reveal to me a bit about the genes behind Murph's color--and at the same time add a couple more chocolate egg layers to the flock. :D

Speaking of them, I'm calling today as 'one week old' for all of them, just to simplify things. DST has me dead on my feet at the moment, but there will be pictures later on. I'm pretty sure that Un is a little cockerel at this point, as her comb is growing quite large already (she's the one I pointed out as such in my last post with pictures). Quatre and Six also are getting more prominent combs, while the other three are maintaining small combs. That looks like a good ratio to me, knock on wood. :fl I'll probably still use the feminine for all of them without thinking about it like I just did in this post, though. I'm not in denial, I swear!

Picture overload!! :D I took individual pictures of the babies again to celebrate their one week hatchday. I have even more beyond these, but I have some things I need to get done real quick, so I'll get them posted a little later. For now, the individual shots of them:

I'm having some kind of weird post box glitch (on this thread only, for some reason?), so will post those pictures as soon as I can. :barnie Let's see if this goes through...

EDIT: Okay, let's try it this way...

The babies couldn't wait to try flying to my lap again.

Hello! It's going okay. Im taking 5 classes (18 credits) so I'm very busy. One of those classes is organic chemistry and I must admit I'm struggling a bit (partially due to my professor). My other classes are going okay though, I just hope I can get through organic chemistry. Along with it I'm taking statistics, microbiology, animal reproductive physiology, and a general education class. Hard to believe I'll be halfway done with undergrad soon. How is your semester going?
Also the babies are very cute! Love all the pictures of them. Ugh I've been itching to get new chickens/chicks for a while. Unfortunately I'll have to wait until I'm out of my parents' house.
