Speaking of the break, though, I've been looking at my 100 Pictures of my Flock project a lot this break, and I possibly have a checklist set for 2016, just debating whether or not I'll have the time for it. I believe I figured out why I've been failing at it in past attempts, so I fixed that. I think I just made each category too specific and it became more of an, 'I have to find this,' type of thing than an, 'oh, I happened to get something for that today' type of thing, which is more what I intended it to be. So instead of detailed categories like 'hens enjoying holiday leftovers', I limited myself to one word for each, save for like four that couldn't be shortened (for example, 'free-range' and 'stink-eye' ). The point is, I don't know if I will do it again next year (I have, what, 5 days to decide?), but I think I have a better chance at it if I do decide to.

OH, OH, OH!! And we actually got an egg today!!

Margie's gone back into lay! Too bad, knowing her, she'll be broody again in a week.

Yay on the egg and even bigger yay about the flock project! I loved following that. I remember when you did a community one too. That was a lot of fun. I really hope you decide to do it again.

I'm leaning more and more toward it. I do have the summer to get a lot of the pictures if I find myself too busy during the semester... And I can always just post the pictures here instead of making a new thread, just to keep it less, I don't know, pressured. I don't think I'll do the community one again, though. That was a lot of work, and the person helping me with it kept messing up the format I had going for the page the pictures were moved to so I kept having to fix it, all this during the last few weeks of that semester... Plus, I found out some months later that quite a few pictures had been lifted from the internet rather than taken by the users submitting them. :/ It's just too much for me right now.

At any rate, here is my checklist if I do decide to go for it.

So, flock news in brief because I don't have much time right now!

Today, I'm happy to say that Elly is finally getting more weight on her! She was just skin and bones there for a while, and I was so scared she wouldn't be able to pull out of it! When I checked on her today, she had a nice layer of fat on her breastbone. I'm so relieved!

Margie laid again yesterday, too, and is acting like another egg is on the way today! Yay, eggs from spoiled, happy hens!

And to finish off, my mom got me a silver locket for the holidays, and it finally arrived today! I've been wanting one since losing my Frou-Frou so that I can keep her memory with me, so I'm very happy. Now, I just need to decide what two pictures I'm going to put in it!

People were using internet pictures for the flock project? Ew. If they have chickens, why not just use their own? But I understand that it was a lot of work. The list looks great. You'll probably have a lot more freedom with what pictures you can use. Glad to hear about Elly! The locket sounds lovely.

I wondered that as well. It wasn't like I was picky about the pictures that were accepted into the project! I literally accepted the first three pictures entered for each category, as long as they were taken within the date specified, so seriously, no one needed to cheat! I don't even know.




I'll get some pictures of the locket if I remember to tomorrow. It's fairly simple, silver and circular-shaped with a diameter of about 1 1/4 inch. The chain is shorter than I prefer, but it's replaceable. These are the two pictures I chose for it for now; shouldn't be too hard to change them out if (when) I change my mind.

The first one is probably my favorite picture of her, so it was a given, even though that was when she was quite young and her eye color was still changing. The second one is much more recent (taken earlier this year, actually) and I picked it because the look on her face in that picture makes me smile every time. I considered using a full-body picture of her for it, but I would have to shrink it down so small that all you'd be able to see is a splashy white puffball, so pictures of her face seemed like the better choice.



Anyway, I should probably be off to bed at this point. Hopefully I'll have pictures to post tomorrow!

Yay, a new year, and so many new possibilities! But the coming of the new year means one thing most of all to me...

Today was the first nice, clear day of the year, and so today was the first picture day of the year! We've had snow, and today was pretty cold, in the 20's most of the day, but the girls were out more today than they were yesterday when it was actually snowing. I haven't yet gotten the heated water bucket out, but it's been kind of interesting. I put one of the two non-heated water buckets in the coop and one out in the yard where the crappy shade cover is, and the one in the coop has yet to have any kind of ice in it while the other has frozen over every day. I guess that's because I'm using the most efficient, least hazardous heating system in my coop--chickens!

Anyway, the pictures were actually taken closer to roost time due to conflicting, err, appointments (meaning the duck wouldn't let me go outside ), so there aren't many actually outside, unfortunately. Quite a few of them lined up with my 100 Pictures themes, though, so I'll sort them as such.



4. Snow Tilde does NOT like this. Not one bit!

Reuben, on the other hand is puzzled by this.

He wants nothing to do with it, as a matter of fact! Time to head inside!

14. Perched Margaret, the only little dear producing eggs at the moment. She looks so fabulously fluffy when she's roosting, doesn't she?

Meanwhile, the Sussex girls are at the bottom of the roost. Is it me, or does it look like Poggy is in trouble and Biddy is overseeing her time out?

16. Colors Poppy just seemed so colorful in this picture.

19. Stare Marama stares with attitude.

And She Who Needs More Sleep, apparently.

27. Crowded Poor Georgette seems so boxed in here!

54. Cold Ani says it's too cold. She's done with it. She's just going to melt into herself and disappear.

Ihi also had some roundness to her tonight. Gotta keep warm!

41. Grumpy No one in my flock fits this category quite as well as Freema. This is her calling.

68. Hugs Meanwhile, this is Elda's calling. She's such a sweetie!

I couldn't decide if this one should be under Hugs or Perched, being that there's a bit of both here, so I'll just leave it here with the rest of the Elly love.

98. First This is actually the first picture I took this year. Tilly looks disgruntled here, too.

99. Stink-eye And I thought Reuben had the best stink-eye of the lot, with this dagger throw from the snow. It isn't funny, dumping him out here!!

I'll have to put together a page or something for the 100 Pictures 2016 project, to keep everything together. Will post a link here when it's done! I already realized a mistake in the checklist that needed fixed--'Sunset' was listed twice, rather than there being a 'Sunrise' and a 'Sunset'. Oops!




And to finish this post, I'd just like to say that there are 132 days 'til chick day. I'm not totally excited about it or anything, of course not.

Yay! Your pictures are already looking great! Good to know the veteran tarp isn't out of commission yet. Haha none of them seem to like the bed-time pictures, though I have to say Freema and Marama look like the devil's hens with those glares...

Can't wait until you get the new chicks!

It's been a balmy 23 all day here in NJ, and about 5-10 degrees tonight and last night. And to think it was 70 degrees only a week ago... I see you have snow on the ground already. Stay warm.

Also I need to thank you for the silliest thing, so the other day I complained on this thread about how none of my colored layers were laying... The next day I got 2 colored eggs, and it just kept going; I now believe that most of them are laying eggs now judging by the large amount of blue/green eggs
