So, if you hatch from a naked neck, does that automatically become the dominant trait or is it a guessing game until they are hatched?
The naked neck gene N is an incompletely dominant gene. That means that if a chicken has one copy of the gene, N/n+, they have a partial expression of it, and with two copies, N/N, they have a full expression of the trait. The most apparent difference between heterozygous N/n+ and homozygous N/N is generally the presence or absence of a tuft of feathers on the front of the neck called the 'bowtie' or 'bib'. Homozygous individuals usually lack this tuft. The catch is that sometimes homozygous individuals have a small bowtie as well, while in heterozygous individuals it can vary from a small tuft to almost the entire front of the neck being feathered.
So with Gwenyth, since she does have a naked neck but none of my roosters do, hatching her eggs would mean at least half of her chicks would also be naked necks, inheriting the naked neck gene N from her and a fully feathered gene n+ from their father. The other half would be more of a guessing game. I believe she's heterozygous N/n+ for naked neck because she does have a little bowtie tuft and she also isn't as bare on the face as I recall homozygous individuals being, but her bowtie is also rather small so I'm not 100% confident in that. But if I am correct, then the other half of her chicks would be fully feathered, having inherited n+ from both her and their father.
I watch a YouTube channel called Chickenlandia. I just love that lady she's so nice and also not pretentious. Anyway, she just got a bantam naked neck.It looks like an oegb with a naked neck. It is so cute.
I'll have to check out that channel! That sounds super cute! Maybe they are OEGB mixes

While there is a standardized Naked Neck breed, the vast majority of naked neck chickens out there, especially from hatcheries, are more akin to mixes that have the naked neck trait, kind of like how many hatcheries sell their Easter-eggers as Ameraucanas even though they're not really the same thing, or I guess more akin to that you can have a frizzle Cochin but you can also have a mix with frizzled feathers. Gwenyth, for example, is a bantam with a naked neck, but she does not have the appropriate traits for a true Naked Neck bantam, so she's more than likely just a mutt with the naked neck trait.

I guess Flury wanted to change things up a bit![]()
Haha, I guess so! After 8 years of the same, I suppose she's allowed to switch up her wardrobe
