Pipd's Peeps!

Busy day! My absolute favorite movie was given an anniversary re-release in theaters for just this week and I'd never seen it on the big screen before, so as an early birthday gift I went and saw it today. UGH, what a fantastic experience. 🥰 Anyway, the birds were NOT happy with me because they had to stay in until I got home. Sorry girls!

Today's picture of the day, day 37, is another double. Kya and the pullet she hatched. :love I was hoping for a halfways decent shot of Kya since I don't really have one, but she flapped her wings and turned away (protesting the late free-range, perhaps?) before I could try for a better shot. :idunno

Cuuute. 🥰

So, you're not going to tell us what movie you saw? 😎

I keep thinking that she was just exhausted and stressed by me. 🥺 Yesterday she kept going back into her kennel when I had taken her out. But, I did think she was doing OK as she hopped on top of it - acting more like a normal chicken. Except, the swelling wasn't going down at all and I know she did not like me messing with her. The other thing is is that she really wasn't eating - even before I took her off of food. A few things that I observed prior make me think that maybe she wasn't doing as well as I thought and she had a lower immune system and this is why she came down with the ear issue. She would roost quite often and even sleep in the run. I thought it was weird, but then she would act fine other times. Most of my chickens aren't sleeping during the day, but I read that sometimes they do.

I looked it up after you mentioned it, but didn't have time to attempt to give it to her. But, it's good to have on hand. I don't know how comfortable I am with tubing, but maybe should learn for my larger birds.

In the 7 plus years that I've had chickens, I have not once saved one from dying when I thought it was feasible. I was hoping this was the one time. 😢

Based on what you've said, I really don't think it's anything you did that caused it. :hugs :hugs Chickens are experts at hiding how bad they feel until they feel really bad, so she very likely had more going on underneath the surface that she was hiding until it got to be too much for her to do so. It does sound like the ear infection was a secondary infection brought on by something else compromising her immune system.

Unfortunately, my track record is not much better than yours on getting birds to recover from ailments like that. It's been very 50-50 for me whether they'll pull out of something when I've brought a bird in to a hospital pen. I think that they're pretty likely to recover when it's an injury, depending on the severity, but because they hide signs of illness for so long, they often are in too rough of shape to recover by the time we are able to detect something is wrong and start acting. Try not to beat yourself up about it :hugs

Oh  Don't judge! It was The Lion King. Not the computer animated one that came out a few years back, but the original, hand-drawn, 1994 version. It's always been just such a beloved film to me, but it came out before my time so I'd never gotten the chance to see it on the big screen before. They did a one-week, 30th anniversary re-release in theaters and I knew I just had to see it this time. Man, the tiny details that you miss on small screens, the absolute artistry of the hand-animation, the depth of the sounds and music, ugh, it was so amazing! A whole new appreciation for the film 🥰

But I promise I watch things other than kids' movies as well

Runner up today is that lovely little light Blue cockerel that Kya hatched. 😍 I was trying to get him to shift over next to two of Opal's girls for a comparison shot because they're more typical of the shade of Blue I see out of my birds, but he took off right after this.

Thank you for your kind words. ❤️

Also, I'm old enough that I was a young adult when the Lion King came out and I'm pretty sure I went to the theater to see it. :old It's a great movie. I saw E.T. on the big screen when it first came out. My parents dropped me off at the mall with some friends. I might have been 11 at the time. My how things have changed. I couldn't fathom dropping preteens off at the mall or at a movie theater. :th

I was alive when TLK came out, but way too young for movie theaters. That probably dates me more than I'd prefer, but oh, well. 🤭

I've actually never seen E.T. before! I know it's a well-loved classic, I've just never gone out of my way to see it. I have such a long list of things that I want to watch at this point that it feels like I'll never get through it! :th It doesn't help that I tend to fall back on my favorites more often than not when I'm looking for something to watch. 🤭

Agreed on dropping off preteens at the mall. My niece is full-blown teenager now but I still shudder to think of her and her friends wandering around without any adults keeping an eye on them, much less my preteen nephew. :th Scary world we live in.

And, not a runner up or anything and not from today, from sunset last night in fact, but we had a little visitor from the woods :love Eastern Screech Owl (Megascops asio) still in juvenile plumage. It couldn't have been any bigger than my teeny-tiny OEGB girls are, but the chickens were terrified anyway. 🤭

Myrna says thanks! 🥰

Ah, that stinks they had to give up free-range early, but at least they were all safe as a result. :hugs

Our picture of the day number 40 is going to be... This grouchy little thing, Gwenyth, who thinks it's wholeheartedly unfair that I won't let her hatch chicks when the coop is already feeling like it's bursting at the seams with all the peeps running around as is. :tongue

@fluffycrow Come talk some sense into this loon! :rant Wait, you're probably the wrong person to ask to talk down a broody 🤣

Runner up is Kya! She finally stood still long enough for me to get a decent shot of her!

You're totally right, but I am glad you tagged me. Can you tell I easily lose threads?

Back to Gwenyth, if she's given you some eggs you can put under her, I'm all for letting her hatch🤭.  Sorry
