Pipd's Peeps!

Yeah, some boys are just super eager to let the world know they're there. When I hatched from my silkied Cochins last year, two of the boys were crowing by the time they were 3 or 4 days old! "Crow" in quotation marks is appropriate, though--they sound more like someone stepped on them!

Here are some 3 week old peepers! There is a general consensus in the brooder that they no longer want to stand still for their individual pictures! These took a LOT of work to get!! :rant Anyway, the wind's been crazy on and off here, but I do intend to get them outside at some point this afternoon. Pictures of that are likely. ;)

Two of the boys are still quite obvious. I think it's safe to say at this point that Deux is a for sure pullet, though, and Trois is looking more and more convincingly like a pullet as well! Cinq has some concerning wattle growth, but looking at their mama's baby pictures, that could mean nothing. Nadine was a pretty masculine little lady, after all, so who knows, right? Six, I'm still leaning towards masculinity on, though. His little comb is scrawny compared to the obvious boys, but pretty thick still, and he's got some little wattles coming in. So it's looking like a 50-50 split, knock on wood!

And, of course, I couldn't help myself...

Trois and her chicken statues again. :p

"When will this end?!"

The kiddos didn't get outside today because the wind was just crazy and cuttingly cold off and on. Instead, I moved the brooder so that I could expand it out. A little duct tape and some zip ties, and they're now at the max amount of space I can give them with this tarp! :D

Here they are digging in their fresh bedding:

(Yes, I need to vacuum. The little mess-makers kept smushing the tarp down on their old brooder set-up and kicking shavings everywhere!)

:frow Thanks, Leahs Mom! Hey, we finally have a single crocus blooming over here! I'm still jealous of your beautiful bunch of crocuses!

While I'm here, here are the kiddos today--4 weeks old! :D

Those boys are getting rowdy, if you couldn't tell by their bitten up combs! Six, it doesn't show well, but I'm pretty sure he's a boy, too, because he's getting color in his comb and wattles now. And he's also got bites on the other side of his comb from wrestling with the other boys. Deux is very clearly a girl, so I've decided to name her Vivienne. :) I have names picked out for Trois and Cinq, too, but I'm hesitant to apply them until I'm beyond a doubt that they're girls. I keep looking at those two suspiciously with those little combs and wattles they've got, though... We'll see. :D

Anyway, here are a few more shots of them. A little attitude from Vivi:

Cinq. :love Un was in the shot, too, but he ducked.

And finally, the update picture with Trois and the chicken statues:

This may end up being the last one--the little squirt wanted nothing to do with these statues and it took a wrestling match to get this shot!

Y'all, I didn't forget the pictures of the kiddos, but I've been distracted and haven't yet cropped and watermarked them. When I opened the duck coop this morning, I found li'l Trudi-Patooti laying in the corner, and sadly she had passed away. Malcolm is devastated, and watching him mourn has me absolutely heartbroken. Poor little guy was calling for her tonight after I closed up the coops for the night... :( Anyway, I'm exhausted, I've got classes in the morning, and a whole ton of stuff to do, so I will get those pictures posted eventually. Hopefully tomorrow afternoon, but no guarantees. Good night

I may or may not have forgotten. But here are the pictures of the kiddos finally! These are actually from Saturday, because I had a lot to do this weekend and figured I'd better do it ASAP so I wouldn't forget. Welp, that worked out well, huh? Anyway, here they are at 5 weeks old. If you can't tell by the scattered / messy backgrounds, they were a LOT harder to get than previous weeks! :rant

Un. I have no idea why this little dinosaur isn't feathering in. All of the 'definitely male' boys were slow feathering, but as you'll see in the other boys' pictures, even they have a good covering of feathers now!

Vivi. :love Such a sweetie. She's been a little bit more standoffish than the other two suspected pullets, but has come around in the past few days.

Deux.jpg

Trois. Ohhh, those wattles...

Trois did NOT want to have a close-up taken, so hers is the absolute worst, all out of focus and everything! Little brat!

Quatre. He's a sweetie, too, and kicks Un's behind whenever the big ol' dinosaur tries to be tough.

Cinq. I was getting more and more sure that she was a pullet, too, and then those wattles showed up! :hmm She'd better be a pullet, she's the hugger of the group! (She blinked in her close-up picture; her eye is fine.)

Cinq.jpg

And finally, Sixer. This little guy is a menace when it comes to moles, scabs, lines, pretty much any kind of mark on the skin. :th

And I did manage to get another chicken statue picture with Trois! However...

She only cooperated long enough for it this week because she was busy doing something else...
