Pipd's Peeps!

Welcome to page 200! Never figured I'd make it this far, but I guess I have the power of rambling endlessly and spamming hundreds of pictures on my side. :p Aaaanyway...

The good news is... Vega laid her first egg last night!!

The bad news? She and Altair perch about 6 feet up on the board above the opening between the main coop and the deck at night. I imagine you can see where this is going.

Oh, well. :idunno It looked like it was cute and super small. Yep, she managed to hit the poop bucket with it. :sick

they can be so funny when they start laying!

That's for sure! Yesterday, Vega kept flying up on me while I was out there and nestling down in my arms like she was trying to make a nest there. :th Not sure I was sold on the idea of standing out there until she decided to lay her egg, though!

I didn't find one of her eggs after all that, either, so I'm wondering where she found to plant her little behind and lay it...

They can lay them anywhere at first...often wherever they are when the egg is ready to come out. I had one laid in front of the sliding glass door

We used to keep straw bales on the front porch for use in the coop and would find eggs nestled down in there all the time. Delivered straight to our door! :p They weren't as much interested in the hay bales, though, and would only occasionally make nests in those. Now all that's up there is a compressed hay bale, so no nesting there. A few of them still climb up on the wood pile and act like they're going to lay, but never have. :idunno Crazy birds! The oddest place I find eggs anymore is up in the dropping trays, because for some reason the Marans and a couple of the Dorkings are fixated on laying their eggs in poop.

Speaking of laying, anyway, it looks like Mona's joined the layer crew with her first egg today! A lovely green egg! :love So, here's the EE trifecta this year. -Editing because I made it easier and added their names next to each respective egg in the picture. ;) - As you can see, Mona's is already larger than the other two! That's the size I expected from Fifi's initial eggs, too, but hey, she's trying, right? :p

I especially like the OE egg!

I can't decide if that's my favorite or if Fifi's blue is :love

But in even more egg-related news, Vega FINALLY laid a second egg and it's so, so tiny!! :love :love I tried to show how tiny it is by comparing it to others' eggs, but I don't think it does it any justice.

This is it among the EE pullet eggs, in this order: Mona, Fifi, Vega, and Ganymede. The lighting wasn't great so the color's a bit off, but Mona and Fifi's eggs, at least, are the exact same ones from the last picture. Ganymede's been laying like a machine so that one could be different. :p

And next to a large Dorking egg to really show how small it is

It is very fun having pretty eggs!

It is! That's why I had to get more Easter-eggers in the flock this year. (I didn't just want to, I had to. ;) ) My youngest Easter-egger other than this year's pullets is Endymion at 3 years of age, and the rest of them are 8 or older, so not many colored eggs from them these days!
