Pipd's Peeps!

We have pips!! :wee P2 is external, and B2 is internal! Not much longer now!!

P2 pipped a bit crooked, at the side of her egg instead of the top, but a pip is a pip, right? :fl

EDIT: I spoke too soon--B2 is now external, too!! :jumpy :jumpy

Egg B2 hatched at about 11:30 pm EST last night, a male Fawn SDW. :love

This was pretty odd to me because P2 pipped a while before B2 did, and yet had absolutely no progress at that point. Knocking the shell loose around the pip revealed that the membrane had dried and turned yellowish. I upped the humidity, put it back in there, and checked every few hours through the night.

This morning, at the 24 hours since pipping mark (about 7:30 am EST), P2 had still made no progress from pipping, not even breaking any more shell away from the pip. I chipped some shell back and checked that everything was absorbed out of the membrane, and since it was, I wet it a bit where it was stuck and helped baby tear it back a bit, then returned it to the incubator.

P2 pushed itself out of the shell not long after that, but seemed very curled up and kind of weak still, so that's pretty concerning to me. S/he is now peeping and moving around, but his feet are still pretty curled up, and he's favoring his right side a bit. Not sure what's up, but he seems to be getting stronger as time passes, so hopefully all will turn out okay. :fl

This was P2 immediately after pushing out of the shell, about an hour ago. Looks like another male Fawn, but I'll hold my judgement until baby is fully dry.

Oh, yes, I almost forgot. B2 was dry this morning, so I moved him out to the brooder with our first little beep-beep. She is... less than pleased with her new roommate. :gig

"That's my spot."

She's taken to popping out from under the EcoGlow and yelling for me, or standing on the back side of it where she can peek through and glare at him. :p

Hatches often go that way!

Hatches often go that way!

Interesting, Ron, thanks for letting me know! I don't always catch them as they pip so I'm not always aware of who was first, but it seems like they usually hatch in order from first to pip to last to pip for me. Obviously, like with everything else related to them, nothing is absolute! 🤣

Here is our last to hatch baby, standing all on his own!! :love Gosh, those feet are wicked. :hmm I do think it's a boy, though I suppose that could change as his fluff dries and fluffs out more.

Back at the brooder, the first baby is starting to accept her little brother and cuddle and nap with him now :love 😍 🥲 💕

Of course, they're siblings, so she also bonks him on the head when she gets tired of him and he pulls her toes and just generally annoys her. :p

Edited to fix the pictures? I hope it works this time... 🤔

It is also why the 24 hour between pip and hatch can be off a lot.

I work on letting them go longer and they usually hatch. Those that do not hatch usually have something wrong with them

Hmm, well I'm just going off of what's typical for these guys, and they're usually pretty speedy from pip to hatch, generally less than 24 hours. I helped because this baby was stuck, not because something was wrong with him, but because the membrane dried out too fast for some reason. My preference is to help in cases like that, especially when I was mostly going for buddies for my lone peeper. :)

And she seems quite happy now that she's got some friends! This is the quietest it's been in the brooder since she hatched, thank goodness! :p

Little last-to-hatch had some tape shoes on overnight, but they were impeding his ability to walk a bit so I removed them and... his toes seem to be staying straight! 😲 I was expecting to have more work based on how wonky they were at hatch! I'm keeping an eye on them just in case, of course.

Now that his shoes are off, he's realized that, well, he has toes. And for some reason, he thinks they're food and keeps biting himself, then crying out like it hurts. Ugh! Silly baby! He is moving around really well now, though, and figuring things out alongside his brother, like getting a drink at their little waterer. :love

The next group to hatch, looks like I might be down one. It's still moving around and everything, but somehow seems underdeveloped, like it stopped growing? Not sure how it could have happened, as the Octagon is forced air and has maintained the same temperature all over, plus I move the eggs around every time I candle so there's just no way that there could be a cool spot in there causing it. It's... weird. 🤔 But hopefully the other two eggs will keep going and hatch fine. I'm figuring on moving the current three babies to a bigger brooder and using the baby bin for these two until they're a bit stronger and won't be trampled by bigger chicks (considering they'll be outnumbered now!), so I'd much rather have both hatch than to end up with another lone chicky. 😬

Oops, sorry for the silence on my end! All's well with the babies; first-to-hatch, who I've taken to calling Bee, is so happy to have her new buddies to cuddle and play with, and the last-to-hatch baby from the last round has grown so strong and his toes are straightened now. You'd almost not know that anything was ever wrong with him!! :love I'll have to sort through my pictures over the past week and see which ones I haven't posted yet. :)

The final round of this staggered hatch has begun a day early--surprise!! :th I still need to set up the second brooder and get another food and water dish cleaned and ready for these babies! Guess I'll be getting that done real fast tomorrow morning, as the babies are sleeping soundly in that room now. 😬

Here's our early pip, egg PR who would have had a double leg band (purple and red, of course!), but it's not looking like it will be necessary with the total number of chicks here.

The egg that I have on-again off-again thought was dead is... actually looking okay again, other than seeming just a couple days delayed. 🤔 I'm honestly not sure what's up with it, but I feel like it'll be a miracle if it hatches at this point. I guess we'll see!
