Pipd's Peeps!

The naked neck eggs are in the Octagon! :wee

I was actually kind of impressed with how they packaged them, at least at first. They were packed in an egg carton stabilized by egg flats to keep it from moving around, and the eggs themselves were surrounded by clean pine shavings. I've gotten eggs like that that did really well, so I was pretty happy... until I dug into the shavings and found that they'd laid the eggs SIDEWAYS in the cartons instead of pointy end down :th So that explains why all the air cells are jiggly!

One also has a crack in it. I took a couple pictures of it just to document it. Looks like what happens when one of my girls lays an egg on top of another egg. I did set this egg as well, but I covered the crack thoroughly with liquid bandage and put it in a corner away from where the other eggs are, so if anything goes wrong I can remove it and hopefully there won't be an issue. Because of who I am as a person, I'll probably be peeking frequently enough to notice if it starts to go bad before it can explode or anything.

Hopefully I'll have lots of cute babies from these eggs in three weeks! :fl

I'm going to wait to set the silkied Cochin eggs, maybe even until Sunday, I haven't decided. It'll stagger the hatch a little bit, but I do have the Ovation to use as a hatcher, so it shouldn't be a problem. Those won't have any issues being turned, so I kinda want to wait until I'm turning these eggs before I set them.

I was finally able to get the big loaf of soap out of the mold last night! Gave it until today for the outside to air dry a bit, and then ran it through the cutter. I wasn't sure how it would look, but it still beat my expectations overall! 😍 It made 10 bars, about 4 ounces each by weight but still curing so they'll probably be closer to 3.8 when done. I did shave a bit off the tops to get rid of the spotting on them after I took these pictures, too. That's soda ash, which the isopropyl alcohol spray I do at the end is supposed to prevent, but, uh, didn't. :idunno

And the end pieces that I cut down for more mini bars. I cut them off because of some bowing from the mold stretching, and because the best swirls are generally further into the loaf anyway.

I'm very happy with how it turned out! Can't wait to make the next batch!! 😁

They are! I was surprised! I really expected it to just be layered without so much swirling. Glad something happened at least! 😁

I was thinking about it while scooping the coop today, and I feel like it might be fun to make some chicken breed themed soap bars. I know how to make fine stripes like those on a Barred Rock, so that would be a start. I'll have to brainstorm some ideas for other breeds, though. There's only so much you can do with soap. :p I also need to order in some fragrance oils and maybe some other colorants as well. I'm hoping I can use a whitener like titanium dioxide to make at least some lighter-colored swirls in vanilla soap that don't eventually just turn dark brown so it's a little more interesting to look at than my vanilla bars so far have been. It'll be interesting to see what happens with that, anyway.

Whoops, that was a bit of word vomit, there. 🤣 Long story short, yay soap!
