Pipped, but no change in 24hr..

First timer to hatching!
Yesterday (about 24 hours ago), 3 hatched in quick succession of one another on exactly Day 17 (counted Day 1 as in the incubator).

This one pipped and I haven't seen any changes since.

I know some take longer than others, but is this a bad sign? Or have chicks successfully hatched after first pipping 24 hours prior?

How long do I wait until I "call it quits"?

I usually help after 24hrs of them pipping (and maybe shouldn't because it's usually 50/50 success (they don't die from me helping, but they are already gone before I get to them--and if they do make it, they sometimes have problems like splay leg or are runts.) I think it is up to you if you want to help at this point. If none of the other eggs have pipped, there's not too much risk in opening the incubator and seeing if the chick is still alive. Perhaps other more experienced quail keepers will have better advice.

People suggested I assist. I did (chick seems "breech"). There was some blood, obv not fully absorbed. Peeping at me as I removed shell. I took off 3/4 of shell, trying to free face, and put back in incubator.


BAD sign? Or can survive some blood loss?



I think s/he might be a Gonner due to my intervening. Fingers crossed for a positive outcome.

I am cheering for it. (I don't think it would have made it on it's own.) I would make sure it can breathe and wait to see if it can absorb more of the yolk and try to help it later. It doesn't sound like he will make it out on his own. Hoping for the best!

If it wasn’t much blood it might be ok, be prepared that ones who you help and they bleed out might not be very strong and may lay on their sides crying. Sometimes some nutridrench will help them get up and around, but sometimes they don’t make it. These side layers often have curled toes because they didn’t get up and stand on them soon enough, and if it lives you may need to correct the toes.
