pipping 1/2 way down the egg

Quote:
It had been pipped a long time and was not zipping at all.
I have 3 others out and from pip through hatch was like 4 hrs total. So fast that I wasn't expecting it and missed the first 2.
Now I have 3 that pipped at 9-10pm yesterday and none are zipping so far.
I know that from pip to zip can sometimes be 24 hrs so I'm trying to be patient but the one that pipped 1/2 way down threw me a curve ball.

Ok. Well try to sit on your hands for now and wait to see active attempts at 'unzipping'. By then you know the vessels and yolk sac should be absorbed. You can see the beak through the hole so the chick has direct access to air and wont suffocate.

Best of luck from UK

I live in the Pacific Northwest. Our weather is much like yours. We haven't seen the sun for what seems like a month which happens regularly here in the late winter and early spring. Well, sometimes all spring honestly! We are grey and rainy 3/4 of the year. I can only hope for it to dry out and warm up. Some sun would be nice, too!
And yes it's 4am. I've been dozing on and off on the sofa so that I can keep tabs on the silly chick.

How did your chick do? I have a chick today that has done the same thing. Dark brown egg so I can't see blood vessels. It has removed a piece of shell way down on the egg (well below the air sac) and cut a "slit" in the membrane. It hasn't done much else in the last couple hours. The two that have hatched did fine and another is clearly in the air sac starting to chisel his way out. They are in egg cartons and have been the whole time. Not sure what to do...

I'm bumping this, because I've had one do the same thing. It pipped about 10 hours ago and hasn't made any progress. I'm debating whether or not to intervene

Sit on your hands . Conventional wisdom is to refrain from intervening until the chick is in obvious distress.

Maybe make some popcorn and watch a good movie?

How do I know when the chick is in distress?

I can see the chicks beak and eye in the hole that is chipped away. He is really pressed up against it. The top piece of torn membrane has a bit of red blood appearance and the bottom membrane is "clean". Is there anything that would help? Should I take the egg out of the carton? The hole is just above the level of the carton. He appears to be breathing but I have not heard any peeping.

This is my first time hatching. My first pip was about 9pm last night. The chick made very little attempt at enlargin the pip hole or zipping until nearly 3pm this afternoon! Talk about goin crazy! Especially since pip#2 was done by 3:20am and was out well before 3pm (less than 12 hrs). Then egg #3 pipped, zipped and was out before we knew it!!! Now I have pip #4 and 2 eggs rocking! 2 more eggs to start showing some kind of action.

Just wanted to share my experience with the long wait between pip and zip... also a Marans egg!
