pipping, does zipping position matter?

All excited, first lot of chicks ready to hatch. First one started pipping. It is at the topside of egg.
Query1: Does it matter in what side it starts pipping?

Query2: I heard it calling last night, with no pipping or moving of eggs. Does this mean it has broken through the airsac?

How long do they last in egg if you can hear them but they havnt pipped?

so excited, off the check them again.......
