I'm new at this hatching stuff! I have a pip, but it's on the "wrong" end! It's pipped near the narrow top part of the egg. Is this little chickie doomed, or is there a chance?

Usually, chicks hatch at the bigger part. It doesn't mean that that pipping near the narrow end means certain death! Some chicks pip in other places than others.

It just pipped within the last two hours. It's the first one. I definitely see movement and my humidity is OK. Just seems that he/she is turned in the wrong direction for pipping!! Thanks for the reassurance guys!

It will probably hatch fine. Usually if they are going to die from trying to pip the wrong end they never manage to pip the shell. They suffocate in the process from no air cell to breathe in. Now that it can breathe the only problem might be not having enough space to turn and fully zip but while that might keep it from hatching on it's own it won't die from that unless you leave it stuck there for days. I'd just wait and if it hasn't made it out by the time all the other eggs hatch then carefully help it.

I have had some hatch by while they pipped on the small end. If you prop your eggs on day 18 so there is a slight tilt with the small side down it sometimes helps them align themselves correctly. I have used Pipe Cleaners to rest the egg againt. It just gives a little help. You can also just use the sides of the inucbator or hatcher and prop the eggs against the side. I hope you little one does ok.

I can see that it's breathing through the tiny pip. I'll wait till it's been 24 hours (late tonight) before I do anything. The eggs were all due to pip today, but so far just the one. It's a good thing I have things to do today otherwise I'd be hovering over the 'bator all day!!
