Pipping progress. Any concerns or advice?

A 'side' pip(not thru the air cell) can take twice as long to zip.
It's like and internal pip and an external pip combined.
As long as chicks beak is exposed and it's breathing let it do it's thing.

It hatched while I was out for dinner. Is the small amount of yolk on the surface okay?

is he moving fine? I know he might be a little wobbly but I think as long as you see him active it should be fine.

This is my situation. This is my first hatch. Day 21 is today. I had one chick to pip and hatch on day 19. A second chick pipped and hatched today.

I candled the remaining 9 eggs and saw movement in all but one. I tried to do the assist, but it ended up being an autopsy. The chick was large and developed; yolk was absorbed, but apparently suffocated. The air sac was almost a 1/3 of the interior of the egg. None of the remaining eggs have such a large air sac except for maybe one. Tomorrow at 10 am will be day 22. I do suspect my homemade incubator ran at a lower temperature versus running hot.

I have another egg that I thought had died and began an assist, but a 1/3 of the shell came off and the little dude is alive. I applied a generous amount of triple antibiotic ointment. All four birds I have seen have been positioned opposite of the air sac.

I'm gun shy now, but what are your recommendations if none hatch tomorrow?

Uhm, I have had chicks hatch as late as day 23. I've heard as late as day 25. Why are you assisting so early? You assisted a pipped egg, how long was it pipped before you did this? It suffocating suggests it didn't lose enough moisture or there was some other problem like it broke its own yolk.

Especially if you think the incubator temp was low, which will make them take longer, it is too early for this. Like I said before it can be 24+ hrs between external pipping and hatching. Assisting when they don't need it is likely to lead to deaths.

I candled eggs on day 21. There was no movement in egg, no chirping, very large air sac, and no veins visible; only a large dark mass existed. It had not pipped internally or externally. Its face was pointed toward the pointed end. My gut feeling was it was dead and it was. This was chick/egg #3.

Chick/egg #4 appeared dead like #3 (same data from candling). I investigated only to see if the problem was same, but the chick wasn't dead.

I believe I had eggs pointy end up in egg carton for the fist 18 days. Does this explain why the chicks #1 and #2 were not positioned to pip in the air sac end? These chicks were able to pip and hatch unassisted.

I suspect the remaining chicks' beaks are pointed opposite of the air sac. With this in mind, do I need to put a small hole in the air sac end? Do I need to candle again today for movement? There are no external pips today and no internal pips as of yesterday. Thanks.

Yes, egg position should be fat end up. That's where the aircell is and that's where they have to align with to hatch out easiest
