I am new at this, after reading everyone's fun hatching experiences, I had to go out and get an incubator for myself. I decided to go low end, see how I liked it, then perhaps upgrade. I got a LG with no turner, no fan. I bought some eggs and they were shipped, and I also collected some of my chicken's eggs as well to compare.

I religiously read all what people had to say about humidity, temps, turning etc..... and now I have some chicks!

My shipped eggs all arrived intact, and I placed three of them under a hen who just hatched three of her own, but a day later was happily sitting on these new ones. She is still sitting, we will see what happens. The rest I put in the incubator with my collected eggs, and I think I got a duck egg in there too perhaps.

After candling, which was so amazing to see, I dumped all of the shipped eggs, some I believe were not fertile. Most of the eggs I collected seemed like they had something going on.

Anyway........it's a day early, but when I got up, most of the eggs were pipped and now a couple hours later I have three chicks.

My question is, how long can it take after the eggs are pipped for the chick to come out? Seems like some that are pipped, I can't see anything else going on. I am not sure if something went wrong, or if it's normal to have pipping and then a long wait until anything further happens. They are a day early, too hight temps or what, but they were due to hatch tomorrow.

If it makes a difference, the ones that are out are 2 buckeyes and 1 turkin out of big brown eggs, and most of the others are cochin frizzles.

Here's what I do, but it will likely not be popular ( but it works for me). If the pip in 3-4 hours hasn't opened to allow AIR to the chick, I peel enough back to allow breathing (just a tiny tiny bit). And yes, I make sure the membrane is open to allow air. I like to see "beak", then restore the egg for the chick to finish.

It sounds like you've had a great first hatch -- congratulations!

It can take 24 hours or more for anything to happen after the pip. I start to worry at 24 hours.

How exciting for you!! Congratulations! I have been thinking about getting an incubator myself .. but want to experience the first hatching with a broody hen.
