Pit bulls in my coop!!

I hate pit bulls... Not because of pit bulls, but because everyone is so quick to point out that they arent bad... I had one, was an ok dog... But bottom line is there are 20 breeds that easily make better pets... Love em or hate em, they exist because dog fighters wanted a better fighting dog... Reguardless, pitbull or poodle, if its in my coop next to my dead chickens i will enjoy shooting it
Evidently you have never been to a UKC dog show/obedience trial and seen the pits entered there. Temperment and trainability of these dogs is outstanding. I understand that not all families of pitbulls are the same, but whenever one generalizes about people or animals they generally stick their foot in their mouth.

My problem is that I want a dog that when people see it they never think about crossing into our yard, but I also want that dog to not want to kill everything that comes into the yard that isn't human...Tough line to tread. I need it to be bad ***, but not so bad *** that it is a menace should it get loose. I also need one that does more than look bad ***...I really need it to do a job, but only when I want it to...it's tough. One day, one day I'll have enough to actually buy a few already trained monsters.

Great Danes can be intimidating! Great guard dog and wary of strangers. Gentle with babies and easy to train; yet, an Alpha among dogs. We have 7 dogs (including a pit bull) but this Dane is the leader of the pack!

To the OP: Add chicken wire, netting, or mesh to a no-climb fence to keep sparrows or smaller critters out of the run

Your Dane is gorgeous! I worked in a dog boarding kennel for a few years and Danes were among my favorite dogs, MY SP's being my most favorite, the Scottish Deerhound rounding off the top 3. If I had a bigger house I'd have a Dane in a minute! If I had wide open land and didn't have to worry about it running off, I'd have a S.Deerhound. My allergies force me to have Std Poodles too, but Ohhh, I wish I wish I wish...

Thanks so much for the tip for using the no climb fencing. I'd never heard of this until today when the earlier poster suggested it.

I know if that happened to me I'd just release my pit bull on those two. She's crazy protective of what's ours. Glad I have the dark side with me. I'm sorry to hear about your loss sadly people with no responsibility get great dogs and let them do as they will with no rules or responsibility. I'm glad the dogs were seized but it makes me sad to think because they're owners didn't care enough to train and keep them secure that they are dead dogs walking. Best wishes.

I wouldn't turn my German shepherd on another dog. Regardless of who won I would still likely have some injuries to my dog and a vet bill on top of losing chickens would not make anything better.

Unfortunately bad Pitt bull breeding is at an extreme high in by area. The breeding has resulted in a lot of aggressive dogs being produced. My sister knows a guy who refuses to neuter his highly aggressive Pitt for example because he thinks breeding will calm him down. There are at least 3 Pitt bulls in a half mile radius who are allowed to roam freely- one of which has mauled multiple other pets in the area. If that one visits my yard he wont be walking home.

Pit Bulls have been made into these terrible dogs, when it honestly has to do with the owner. My brother has a pit that is the sweetest thing. But my brother's ''friend'' has a pit that has been made crazy and mean due to bad owner ship. Most people don't even know the pit bulls true name-The American Terrier

I know! Ever look at Petfinder.com? It is almost hilarious how wrong these ''dog'' people get the breeds wrong. The last on I saw was a long legged black and white pit bull that they were trying to pass off as a Border Collie! Not even close!

I swear if it were me I would have taken that gun away from my husband and started shooting myself. That is horrible! So sorry...

I think they do that so people can adopt them. My pit is registered as a Catahoula/mix/mix I didn't do it, that's just what her adoption papers said. I didn't even know until after we were home.
