My mother had "the talk" with me when I was twelve years old. Not the female body function talk; I surprised her with the need for that discussion when I was ten. This was the one that was supposed to end with a hug and "I will always love you no matter what you do and you can always come to me if you get in trouble."

The words and hug did happen but i responded, in all seriousness, "Oh, I'm not gonna do THAT until I get married, and I'm not getting married until I'm 22!"

She looked down at my face against her bosom, almost sadly, and said, "Honey, don't be heartbroken if it doesn't happen that way."

She was so right, but she died the next year and wasnt able to see the truth of her words.

I was divorced just before my twenty-second birthday.

The memory of her words warms me. "Honey, don't be heartbroken if it doesn't happen that way." it works for so many situations, doncha think?
