Placement of wafer thermostat?

We're using an old wine fridge with a light bulb as a hatcher. We tried a hot water heater thermostat, but the temp swing was too great, so I ordered a wafer thermostat, which I received today. How close/far away should the new thermo be from the heat source (in this case a light bulb)?
