Hello! Brand new to the realm of chicken ownership (or soon to be anyway) and am wondering if anyone has a coop in the woods? Aside from right next to the road, the woods is the only other options for our future flock. I can clear some of the smaller trees to make sure, but I'd love to see some ideas on how a coop/run in the woods might look.

(I did a forum search but a lot of the older posts no longer have working links/photos).

Thank you!

Main concerns with a set up like that would be to make sure the trees around are stable and properly windsailed to minimize chances of branches crashing down, and you'd probably need to bump up predator proofing as I'd imagine you'd see more predators coming through the woods. A solid roof on coop and run would be a must.

I can't come up with any examples...hopefully some will come along.
Some pics of your woods might help here.
Pro could be shade....lots of cons like clearing space, placing fencing and predator protection.

Welcome to BYC! @MoonWater
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

Thank you! Yes, I know it would need extra predator protection for woods-type predators.

@aart Thank you. I've update my location (Richmond, VA area). Not sure what the weather holds exactly in this area but I know it won't be quite as hot as where I moved from (SC). I will add some photos of the area I'm looking at to place the coop later.

@Ted Brown thank you for that link

Very pretty site. Do you know what the drainage is like at that location (my guess is decent, since there's a good amount of leaves and such built up). If you were to clear out the small trees how much space is there to work with?
