First Summer Foray by Wild Birds
I’ve noticed fourteen birds already today, and it’s only early afternoon, and I’m not really looking.
A flock of six has just finished a lengthy semi-reconnaissance. I was lucky enough to hear them, and managed to watch them at length (from under the tamarillo tree). They were shy, one of them simply refusing to come close enough to graze. There was a lovely 18-month old with them (?).
Then I saw a bird manoeuvring against them. It was Felicity’s consort! Felicity and Consort were moseying onto the scene, and they displaced the six in a sort of super slow motion ‘sweep’ – then left with them.
The power play is worth noting: the intruding birds stood stock still as Felicity and Consort slowly ‘swept’ towards them. One by one, clearly according to their individual inclination to tangle with Felicity Plus, they withdrew.
This season, we’ll try, for the first time, to pay more attention to the details. Long-term readers know that we’ll see flockettes and sorties of birds on this turf in forthcoming months.
