Hi everyone! I am new to this whole world of raising chickens but I am very excited! I have been reading all the great tips you all have to offer and I can't wait to start my journey! Hopefully we will be drawing up the plans for our coop this weekend.

Hello and welcome from Ohio....so glad you joined BYC

Good luck with your coop planning. Have you checked out the Coops tab at the top of the page? Thats where I get all my coop ideas. Some really neat stuff out there to think about.

Cant wait to see what you come up with and what kind of chickens you decide on

Thanks! I think we are going to go with Leghorns. I would love to get a couple Cochin's as well but I haven't found anywhere local that has them. I live in Phoenix so I would most likely have to get those shipped but I'm not sure how i feel about the whole "shipping chicks" thing...

Leghorns are great egg layers and they are much friendlier than I expected. I have 2 silver, 2 brown and 1 white leghorn and all but the white 1 are quite tame. The white 1 is a bit skittish, but once you get hold of her she's o.k.

Thanks for the info! I have dogs and cats as well so it's good to know which ones are less skittish! My dogs are very gentle with our cats so I'm expecting them to take to the chicks quite well :) The cats don't go outside so I won't worry about them.

You are doing things the right way. Search the forums, question, plan and you will be successful with your flock. Welcome to BYC.
