Planning to own chickens

Hello, Alex, and welcome to BYC. Obedience training, hot wire if necessary, and never trust your dogs alone with the chickens - it all can work.
I am a kind of a fan of those collars. If by hot wire you are referring to the zap them collar, mine just need to hear it beep to become instantly compliant. Not that I advocate for those training collars but they do work I have some thick headed dogs.

I used to breed and show Cocker Spaniels. They never noticed any birds, mice or whatever.
Hunting instincts were bred out of them generations ago, I imagine. They were also in outdoor runs and no birds ever came near them. A raccoon tried scaling the fence but was scared off when they started barking. Aside from that I think a loud "NO!" would have caused them to have heart failure. They were very sensitive to loud voice commands.
