Planted aquariums or aquascaping, anyone?

Thanks for all of the great advice, everyone! I've got some great driftwood and I have decided what plants I'll be starting out with; Java Moss, Anubias and once those establish, Frogbit. I'm getting the moss from the friend who sold me the tank. I joined aquabid.com for the others.

Last night, step one was completed. The stand was built!

Tonight I'll paint it gloss black.

Thank you! It's just 2x3s, MDF, and a bit of quarter round moulding. Along with some scraps we had at home, it only cost about $25 and took maybe 5 hours to build. The doors on the front aren't functional. We went back and forth between making them functional and putting a shelf inside or just having one flat panel across the whole front. I guess this was the happy medium, haha. After it's painted I'll put some brushed steel handles on the "doors".

Goldfish are evil. You can't keep a planted tank with goldfish. Not even plastic plants. They rip them up and throw them around. Even the tough and hardy Java moss will be destroyed. You could maybe glue plastic plants to the bottom of the tank. ;-)

Go for a rock and wood set up.

Stand looks great. Keep us updated with pictures please. Can't wait to see it planted.

This is just the beginning! I have several plants coming this week. I need to get some posterboard or something for a background, too. I can't wait to really get started. I think the driftwood and Java moss tree will look awesome once it fills in.

I also started a 10 gallon tank for my Betta and Corys. It's going to be sort of an Amazon "rootscape". Very, very excited.
