Make sure to keep the java moss that's up on that piece of wood pruned back pretty well so it does not shade out the other plants you're putting in.

Didn't even think of that, thank you! Hey, how long does Java moss take to attach to wood? I have it tied on with thread as of now. The other plants should be here tomorrow or Thursday!!!

IME java moss only 'attaches' by having new growth that some of it sort of 'creeps along' the substrate and grows, what, rhizoids or whatever you're supposed to call them, weenie little protrusions that grip the substrate. So, I'd say it will probably not stay there on its own til it makes substantial new growth along the wood.

So I completely changed direction, but I'm much happier with it now. This is the final configuration and I can't wait until everything establishes! I've got a Shubunkin and a red and white Oranda in there now. I think I'll either get one more goldie, either another Oranda or a Ryukin OR a longfin albino bristlenose Pleco if I can get my hands on one! My Betta tank is also in the works. I've currently got a java fern, a crypt, anubias, and dwarf sag in there with five emerald corys and a GORGEOUS new betta. I'll get some pics of it after work, but it's definitely missing something. Maybe you guys can help me figure out what it needs!

I just want to compliment you on what a beautiful job, the stand was amazing, and the direction you have gone with your tank is awesome! I hope everything does well and maintains a healthy balance.

My DH got a little 8 gallon Bio-Cube on Craigslist last month, it came with the greatest lighting and timer, we needed to fix a few things, but overall it was great to set up. I am wondering if you are finding the overall cost of things adding up?? Even though the initial set up was a great deal, we're investing quite a bit in the other stuff (filter, ballast replacement, bulb, aquascaping)...so this tiny tank is pretty pricey!! But I have had aquariums off and on for years, complicated and easy maintenance, and this little one is by far one of the nicest! We have the Java Moss well established now, and two other types of plant, 3 neon tetras, 2 cherry shrimp, and 1 algae eater. It is all a gift for our now 12 year old son James to have in his room!

Sadly we lost our 11+ year old Oscar two weeks ago, he went belly up. His big Bowfront tank sits empty, alone.......and now that DH got practice on the little Bio Cube...well, he's looking at a new light set up and converting it to an aquascape in a bigger scale! Whew!

Planted aquariums are a lot of work, but very pretty to look at. Mine includes about 156W of T-5 HO lighting, CO2, & Flourite mix w/sand.

Your tank was beautiful before but is STUNNING now! My question for you is though....why goldfish? I'm even surprised that you can have a planted tank with goldfish...mine would always eat any vegetation. Beautiful non the less and I can't wait to see your other tank and this one as it progresses!
