I have chickens for the first time. I want to plant a vegetable garden in my backyard which is shared by my free ranging chickens. Gardeners - what are you doing to co-mingle chickens and gardening?

Definitely keep them out. They will scratch up your starts and eat whatever they deem edible. My chickens ate all my pak choi last spring before I put a fence up. I've had better luck with ducks in the garden, although I've heard others say they are just as bad.

You can't let them in the garden until all the plants are well established - late summer or fall

After losing my first garden which was decimated down to the roots, we built this with some 9 or 10ft tree stakes and two rows of 4ft high garden fencing from Home Depot. Sometimes they still get in if they get up on the wall behind it and jump down into it. It hardly happens anymore though.
