Planting Blueberry bushes

It is also my understanding that it is important to buy a southern variety or a northern variety. Something to do with the chilling requirements I think.

Blueberries do not have roots, per se. They have fibrous strings that have a symbiotic relationship with microbes in the soil. Soil needs to be loose, acid, and mulched with acidic mulch.
Rabbits love them , deer love them, mice love them especially when the snow flies. If you can get them started, they will bear for decades with proper pruning.
I am still trying to get mine started.

My mother's plants were started in 1950 and still bearing. Now I know why she was so very particular about them the first ten years!
Varieties: you need two for cross pollination and yes there are northern and southern; highbush and lowbush.

My mom cheated somewhat, she started hers in a container until they got a little too large to worry overmuch about mice. The deer are always an issue here...

After roughly 5 yrs in a container my dad (cursing her ideas all the while) transplanted them into the beds they will be living in...

This last summer was the first in their new home and they did splendidly! If you are concerned about getting them started perhaps using a container at first??
