Planting strawberries?

You might get a few in late summer. If I were you I'd get some started ones (not expensive) and put them all together. Do you know what variety you have? I have 4 different kinds, and they're all "ever-bearing", so you get less berries but all season long.

Have you ever heard that asparagus ruins the soil for other plants? Not completely true- my strawberries are taking over my asparagus bed

I never started any indoor, I just bought starts from ebay and planted. My first year was very poor in fruit, but my 2nd was amazing very abundant...to the point I didn't need to go to the strawberry patch and we would put up 1-2 qts. a day depending on how many the kids want to eat. The first year they spend just rooting themselves...this will make a very healthy plant.

For years thereafter, I snip off the early runners so most of the plants energy can go to the fruit, however, later in the season, I'll take the runners starting then, let them get started rooting, then snip 'em and transplant into a new row. That way you end up with a rotating strawberry bed. HTH

I haven't had much luck with them. This last year was year two, and I probably got a total of 20 strawberries. And they were little, mutant,quasi-moto berries. Tasted ok, but not very pretty . But in the desert, where water is premium, they haven't been worth the resource.

But I agree-the sister site is as good a resource for gardening as this one is for chickens. See you there!

Thank you everyone for all of your help and advice! I think first I'll see if I can even grow the things before I try making runners and all that other good stuff. I'm afraid if I go to the garden sister site I'll get just as hooked there as BYC, haha!

Thank you! Before I get too serious into growing strawberries, I think i'm just going to see how my current ones turn out. I believe the kit came from Buzzy Bee, but I'm not sure.

I just clicked on 'more smileys' and was like...WOAH! Never did that before, lol. Anyways, this (

) seems appropriate for what I'm about to say. There's a storm going on, and this morning I found the bucket on the ground with the soil all messed up.
