In my reading posts I've heard some people say that they've planted things by the chicken run only to have them die. They apparently get 'burned' by the chicken poo.

We would like to plant some pine trees and shrubs either inside or just outside the run area for both shade and a wind break. Are they doomed to die? Can it be done? The ground is level so there won't be run off onto them.

We have lots of honeysuckle growing up the side of the run and a rose of sharon in the run. The chickens love to congregate under it and preen. They seem to be doing fine except for the bottom leaves which the birds continually prune.

After trying to grow staghorn sumac in the chicken yard and having to fence it off, I'd vote for outside the pen. Then the poo woudn't bother it anyway. They will keep things trimmed for you.
