Planting veggies in the chicken run...will it work?

Build a grazing frame in your run maybe 6" high and cover it with chicken wire. The idea is for them to eat the green stuff as it grows though but they cannot get at the roots to eat those. You can try veggies of you wish but many people use grasses and plants native to their area that chickens will eat. Not sure what that would be in Idaho but many people use things like Bermuda grass and clover. This is for runs that are void of vegetation.

This is a great idea! I will definitely look into the clovers!

If you make a ring of welded wire, chicken wire, or hardware cloth that is high enough that they can’t hop over it, you can plant inside of that. The flock can get their heads through welded wire, but won’t be able to reach the plants in the middle.

If you check out “Edible Acres” on YouTube, he uses this approach to grown everything from grass/clover for the chickens, to veggies, to sunflowers and small trees/shrubs.

If using this approach to grown grass/clover for the flock, you can even give it to them in sections by moving the setup off center (but still protecting part of the patch).

Great idea! I have some wire sitting in the yard that would work perfectly...

I think this is an awesome idea! I will give it a go as well.
