I am building a coop and run, and wanted to know if folks have experience with planting and horticulture that is chicken friendly. I wanted to plant along the run to give the chicks privacy from predators but something non-toxic to them.

Also read something online somewhere about winter venting and live in New England where we can have relatively extreme winter weather, and wanted to know about folks' experiences with venting a coop and what works and what doesn't. Thanks in advance for any replies!!

I am planting kale now. It will overwinter & get 6 feet tall in the spring. They love it & since they can't reach all the way to the top the plants go to seed. It shades the coop & they eat what grows through the fence.

Anything you plant they will eat or dig up looking for bugs.

I like that Idea. I was on the verge of plating Taxus Yew along the outside of the run for privacy and shade for them in the summer, until I googled it and discovered that it was toxic !
A friend in town has some kale, so I will accept the offer to take the leaves and seeds when they mature!! Thanks for the tip!

I bought them some crawlers from the town supply one morning and when I offered, they balked. They love refried beans and watermelon. They're a bit choosey!
