I've got trees and shrubs for shade and shelter. Chickens are jungle animals and appreciate them! Also viburnums, river birch, pines and spruce trees, fruit trees and bushes; many choices. Mints vary in flavors, and can be very good ground cover. The birds will make dust bathing sites and dig for worms and bugs, so plants must be tough. I just planted a ninebark, and they have eaten all the lower leaves. It will get pretty tall, so hopefully will survive. Try native plants, they should be tougher. Avoid the obviously toxic things like Japanese yew, andromida, etc. Mary
