Hi all, newbie here. We are building our chicken coop next week, and I am finalizing some details on my plans and making the shopping list for anything neededfor the construction and I am super excited! But I was curious if anyone had used plasti dip in the construction of their chicken coops. We were contemplating using it on the floor and first 6 inches of the walls and entirely in the nesting boxes. It would be easier to clean and help reduce pest problems. For anyone who is unsure of what it is, its a dipable, paintable, sometimes spray able plasticy, rubbery coating. I was thinking how clever an idea it was and went to research to see if it had been done before and can't find anything on it anywhere...

I haven't ever used it, but I know what it is.

I think most people have had good success with Black Jack 57, a roofing coating. It is likely a lot less expensive, and while there are brush marks, the surface dries a lot smoother than Plasti-dip. Smoother is easier to clean and has less pits to collect bacteria and such. Common practice is to apply it to the floor and about 12" up the walls, but I have seen someone who used it in nestboxes.

I am wondering how well Plasti-dip would hold up to chicken scratching/pecking?

Keep us posted and give us an update after you try it for a time. Give us your impressions. Sounds like it may have advantages over Black Jack.57. Cost is always a major concern with most of us senior BYCERs, Overall value is never discounted however. Hope it works out for you. I personally use a lot of crazy carpets ( plastic sheets used for down hill sliding in the snow) and remnants of vinyl flooring to protect the wood in my coop. I like the fact that they are removable and easy to hose off when cleaning.
