Plastic drums for automatic waterers

Our neighbor works at a school cafeteria and has offered to get me 5-gallon containers. She says they have tons of them to spare. You might check around any school or other cafeteria type operation you may have contacts into.

I'm in SW Ohio and found barrels for $8 in Sunman Indiana, I don't remember what was stored in them I use them for burning. He advertises on craigslist on the cincinnati page. I also found a guy on the east side of cincinnati and bought a rain barrel from him (40 gallons). It was $65 though. He apparently sells them as a side business to local municipalities, and in February is supposed to have 20 gallon barrels fabricated to his specs, he says they will be considerably cheaper than $65.

If you can get barrels that had washer fluid in them I would jump on those and rinse them very well. Propylene glycol is a deadly poison in large amounts but I promise you everyone here has consumed a fair share of it one way or the other. It is used in many body care products, a lot of tooth paste and is even an additive in foods. It is used as a humectant in many foods and as a stabilizer in food colorings etc. So unless you are a hard core label reader we have all had a plenty.

Rinse them very and I am sure you will be fine. Let the sun dry them well also.

DBCann is right, I work for Coca-Cola Enterprises (bottler) and our warehouses usually have large, food grade plastic drums you can probably get for free or very cheap. They do not have removable lids, however, so they may be hard to work with. Then again, they might work REALLY good once you get them washed out, I will probably get a couple when I have my coop finished.

I live in Texas, but we have facilities in Ohio as well.
