Hi everyone, I have a question regarding the plastic garden netting/fencing.

My coop and run are secure using 1/2 inch hardware cloth.

Now I am going to make chicken tunnels so they can have more room. I live in the city and can't let them loose. So the chunnels will lead to an area that I close off like. I need it to be light enough that I can move it around. I want to place this over the area we have our blueberry bushes. So the girls can dig up the weeds around the bushes. I the want to move it over the garden to let them dig and stir in the compost later one. Maybe even place it in different areas of the yard. It will be pretty big so I may be biting off more then I can chew.

So my question is would this plastic hardware fencing work to keep the girls in the box area? The chunnels will be made out of galvanized fencing. They won't be left in that area unless I'm around so I'm not worried about raccoons or hawks. I just want to keep it light and them from getting away.

I don't see why you couldn't as long as it is strong enough to hold them. If you don't think so check into the little green garden fencing it's pretty light you might be able to put wheels on one end and a handle on the other. Hopefully I was able to help in some way

Thank you. I'm just so new to chickens I didn't want to miss a reason why to not use it. I like the wheels idea. That way I would be able to move things around if I don't have a helper.

I use that fence all the time. And I also move it to where ever I need it for that time. Of course it's not predator proof and you could have some fly out depending on the breed (leghorn), otherwise I love it.

Thank you. I'm planning on using the plastic cloth on top also. We can't have the girls loose at all or we will get called in. So I'm working around the bylaws with the chunnels and enclosure to give them more space.

Research 'chicken tractor' and see if you can find something will work for you. These are small structures designed to be moved around the yard. Some are pretty sophisticated and some are simple and easy to move. Good luck and enjoy your chickens!

Something else you might consider is 4' x 8' plastic lattice. It's flexible enough to form tunnels, and just use small stakes to keep it in place. I did that to make a tunnel from my coop to the run (it was a weird, temporary situation), and it worked well. It's kind of pricey at the big box stores, but I picked up a bunch on Craigslist for $12 apiece. Now I use them for something else.

Something else you can use is 16' cattle panels that you get at Tractor Supply. Just form an A-frame with 2 panels (about $40) and it will be self supporting. They're a little bit unwieldy because they flex a bit and are so long, but not too difficult to move around. You can also get 8' panels that would be easier to move around.

I didn't think of that. I already have the plastic cloth so I will try to figure out something simple to do. I'm going to show my husband this because it is very simple and not a bad price. I picked up 100 feet or that galvanized fencing and made my chunnels today. I can't believe how easy that part was.

20 sections :)

I made chicken tunnels w plastic hardware net and bamboo....fastened w zip ties. I made about 50' of tunnel in 2' moveable sections. I anchored them w tent stakes.
I stopped using it when I began free ranging, and now use the tunnel sections in the garden to protect plants.
