I am considering making a plastic tote chicken porthole feeder. I have searched the feeding and watering forum and have done a basic search using different words. I have seen the bucket porthole feeders - hanging type and set up on blocks. I welcome advice and pictures similar to my idea. And FYI, I have 7 regular sized chickens. 5 hens and 2 roosters. Yes i know the hen to rooster ratio is not what it should be, but it is working. Al is a very good senior rooster keeping his flock managed.

Good morning. I am in the process of diy a PVC pipe feeder in my coop. In my current coop situation a tote would be to bulky. Best of luck with your build, let us know how it goes if you make it.

I made one from a shoebox sized plastic tote- cut a few holes in the sides for their heads to go in- for when we had chicks this spring. I thought it worked quite well, it kept any rain water out of the food, the chicks couldn’t poo in the food nearly as easy(they did stand on top and poo on the lid however) and there was much less spilling. It did take the chicks a little while to figure it out though and they (and my family for some unknown reason) preferred the open feeders so ours kind of slowly fell out of use.

Why do you want to use a tote, instead of a bucket?

I have 3 buckets, 1 in the coop and 2 in the run, for 24 chickens. If you do a Google search, it will bring up some that are made from a tote. I don't know if it will lead you to reviews, or help answer questions you have about using a tote.

Thanks for replying. I'm thinking of using a tote to create more floor space between chicken feet while feeding - to keep the chickens spread out while they're eating. One of my 4 week old chicks was trampled under the chicken feeder. I assume it happened because all of the chickens were crowding around the feeder.
