Play sand or contractor sand as chick grit?

I also just smashed the larger grit ment for older chickens with a hammer. Do cover it as it can go flying.

I had planned to provide play sand as grit for my chicks, since I have several bags of it. However, it seemed too fine to me, so I went out to Tractor Supply and picked up a bag of chick grit. When I put some in the brooder, I found out it was approximately the same size as their starter crumbles.

Some play sand can have silica in it. You probably want to avoid that kind. We use contractors sand, because we had some on hand. They are also in the yard an hour or two each day and I'm sure they are picking up some gravel there.

I use parakeet gravel/grit for my chicks, you can get it at walmart/kmart/pet store....I also put play sand in a box and the chicks dust themselves with it.

You are right not to use the "high calcium" pet bird grit if that's all that's available and I should have mentioned that in my post. Good catch.

Whew, I just purchased this today, wondering the same thing! Thankful I haven't given any to the girls yet.
