I have purchased a childs playhouse to convert to a coop.
It is 5 ft by 6 ft and I plan to raise it up and put a run underneath.
it does not have a floor but I plan to put a slide out tray design.

I thought about using vertical boxes instead of horizontal to make use of the side door instead of having to retrofit it with horizontal boxes.
Do you think that would work?
Also any other suggestions on the conversion would be greatly appreciated as we are new to this.

Thanks!

sounds like you've got a great start! vertical boxes shouldn't be a problem. just make sure the windows/doors are very secure and there isn't too much of a breeze that can pass through (I might patch up the holes on the door-- that will get chilly in the winter.

Instead of trying to patch the cute cut out holes on the door just get you a piece of sheet plastic from Lowes and attach it to the inside of the door in the winter. Make it removealbe so you can take it off when its hot.

I got to work weatherproofing/insulating the coop.
Put great stuff on the interior of all joints and exterior silicone on the outside of all joints.
I have some insulation that I am putting on the inside.
It is a rubberized foam type of insulation... reminds me of yoga mats.
Do you think I need to put something else on top of that so the chickens won't try to eat it/peck at it...
and if so, what/ plywood or scrap vinyl?

I'd put either wood or the scrap vinyl over the foam insulation, guaranteed they will pick at that! Mine love the board that I have up on the walls of the garage, the ones with the little holes in them so you can hang hooks and stuff for your tools? They love to peck those holes! Little heathens, LOL!

That play house is adorable! And I agree that vertical boxes won't be an issue, they will love their little nests once they get used to them and don't think you're giving them individual ovens... They're some paranoid little buggers, but once they settle in, they get real possesive.
