I do have soil and sand where I live, but I got my hands in a lot of children's playsand which I don't know what to do with and I am wondering if using playsand is harmful to chicks, quails, or poultry in general.

Many peeps have many different opinions about sand. Some are for it, and some strictly against. The claim that sand is silica, is true,, Silica is found abundantly in the earths crust.
The concern is with crystalline silica. and the potential dangers to lungs. (humans, and animals)
If the particles are large, then not likely to be inhaled. That is why I suggest using course sand in chicken applied uses. Play sand is more finer grade, and thus more prone to be inhaled. That does not translate to all of the grains being inhale-able,,, but the finer the sand,, the more likely to contain more of the smaller particles.
People are enjoying times at the beach,,, and I don't see warning signs out there.
Seems everything in this world is harmful in one way or another.. The key is amount of exposure.
A note of personal observation; I have spots with sand, and the rest is common soil in my run area. I see the chickens prefer the soil areas over the sand.,,, to dust bathe. Actually never seen them choose the sand area. They do scratch thru there maybe in search of bugs.. :old :idunno
The number one choice for my hens to dust bathe in ,,, are ashes. Followed by potting soil, and then just plain dry earth soil.
