I read that chickens need grit to digest their food especially if what they're having is fibrous. i had this short visit in our local vet store and i found this "corn grits". i am feeding my chickens with cracked corn, and i am not sure what "corn grits" are.

Anyone?

Mmmmm, yummy! Dang, companies are marketing grits for birds? Add some cheese and you've got breakfast!

Corn grits are not the grit to aid digestion. You can give them the corn grits as a treat just like the cracked corn.

All this provided they have access to actual grit.

grit for digestion is small ground stones, usually like granite, small enough for the bird to swallow.

I never add the grit to the feed, I found it was a great way to waste a lot. I just scatter some on the ground when I think of it and let them peck it up. That most closely mimics how they would find it in the wild.

thanks devora. i just dont get why it has the word grit in it. LOL.

Hominy grits has grit in it's name and it is not gritty in the least! lol Go figure.

Grit is tiny pieces of rock or stone, usually granite, that is held in the chicken's gizzard to help grind up their food.

Corn grits are ground up hominy. Here in the south it's on every breakfast table along with the cat head biscuits, red eye gravy, black strap molasses and fried eggs. Usually eaten with a bit of butter and maybe some syrup.

Then there are G.R.I.T.S......
