Please Everyone- Earlobe Color Has Nothing To Do With Egg Color

I have seen so many post saying things like "that chicken has white earlobes so it lays white eggs". No, that is not true. Maybe it is a coinsedince (sp?) but it does not mean they lay the color of their earlobes. Note: Chickens with red earlobes do not lay red eggs.

Actually earlobes do play a part in the color of egg that a chicken lays, red earlobes usually lay brown eggs, and white earlobes lay white eggs. I say usually but there are a few exceptions, like the Lamona (Extinct) had red earlobes but layed white eggs. Then you have the Easter Eggers, they have different colored earlobes but I think the most have red and they lay a blue to green egg with the occaisional brown egg.
Maybe someone will come along a explain it a little better.

In my experience, the key word is "usually". There are some breeds that follow the rule, but it is easy to break the rules.

My araucana have red earlobes and they lay blue or green eggs. I've seen birds with white earlobes lay brown eggs.

Penedesencas have white earlobes and lay dark brown eggs.

Some Ameraucanas have white earlobes and lay blue eggs.

One of my Polish cockerels has red earlobes, but came from and produces white egg layers.
