I am in a predicament and I'm hoping some of you will be able to help me decide what to do. It is kind of a long story, so short story is I have one Pekin duck that lives in the lake outside my house and I need to capture him and find him a new place to live so he is not alone and doesn't get killed. He had a friend with him but something got him last night and I need to decide what to do with the remaining one ASAP. I am in Illinois right across the bridge from St. Louis if anyone knows any place near here he could go. If anyone is interested I will explain how this happened, because I know everything about this is bad, but right now I mainly just need guidance on what to do with him because I am at a loss. He's been living in the lake for almost a year and he is fed by us everyday. He originally was kept in a cage and I don't know how well he would go back to being kept in a smaller environment. I am not a duck keeper or have any experience with them, I was just stuck into this situation. Thanks to anyone who has any input.

Does he come up to your place to eat? There are ways to capture placing food into a dog crate or inside a fenced area [temp] luring him in. He really does need to be where he is safe domesticated ducks don't do well living on their own especially since they can't fly to escape predation. As for sanctuaries maybe google would bring one up in your area or go to the "where am I where are you" look up the states and post there. Do you know if drake or female? Domestic ducks can live in fencing that is what keeps them safe. They just have to have safe housing for night time.

One, I would make sure the plan for what to do with him once he is captured is already sorted out.
Two, if you can feed by hand capturing him shouldn't be a problem.
Three, it sounds as if he has had a good enough life that if nature takes its course, you shouldn't feel bad at all.

We have dogs in our fenced in yard so he comes up to eat just outside of it. I have known it is unsafe for them out there and I have constant anxiety about it. My neighbor releases Rouens into his lake and he just lets them die, doesn't feed them or anything, just drops them in and sometimes they don't even make it a day. He told us we shouldn't care so much about them and you can just get new ducks. It has caused a lot of fights and he's even called the police on me for trespassing a foot onto his property to feed them. He set up cameras and everything. When we moved here there were 3 and 2 ended up dying so my mom got the Pekin for him to not be alone, which was not a good idea but it happened and now I need to find a new place for him. I will definitely look into those options you gave me. Thank you so much.

Yeah, I'm not sure where we will put him when we capture him so that is a big issue right now. He comes up to us and eats out of a bowl but he doesn't let us touch him. He is only a few years old and it is our fault he is here so I would feel awful if something kills him. He has been happy out in the lake but I want him to have a much longer life.

Oh I see. Come up with a plan of what to do once captured first and go from there.

Do have dog crates? or dog X pen? or know someone who does. He'd be fine with food and water in something like that for a few days till you can take him to a new home. Most of us use dog crates for our animal hospital. Or even a large plastic tote for the time being.

I do have a dog crate. I will have to wait until he comes back onto our property when he is hungry. He went back over to my neighbors property where I assume the body of the other one is, I can't even be sure if the other one is dead because I'm not allowed to go over there. The whole situation is a mess. Thank you for your help.
