i have fifty hens lots of breeds. our favorite is barred rock.

I say Naked Neck, they are docile, tolerate heat and cold well, and also descent layers.

Oh yeah, and they are cute too.

we love our barred rocks too! they're feisty and funny and friendly. and by far our best layers. good for an egg a day. also, the silver laced wyandotte is pretty dang cool. seems smarter than the others.

haha, I have black wyandottes too, and they are a LOT smarter than my brahmas. They will come to the door when they see me coming because they know i will give them something yummy even if they don't see it~ and they like to play with the seed dispensers I made out of easter eggs (drilled holes in and put feed, seeds, treats in it)

The brahmas look really cool, but I don't want to wait that long to get my flock going.

A local feed store has barred rocks now...

Maybe I should still get the RIR, SLW and EE, plus a barred rock from the local store.

How does that mix sound?

You can't go wrong with a Plymouth Rock, especially since you are tied to what is available at retail - and that is what is available.
