That is horrible. I'm so sorry. We lost about 2 dozen chickens to a dog attack. The dog left the limbs and bits and peices all over the yard for us to find when we came back out side. The problem was, we were right in the house, oblivious to the crime being commited. I felt so stupid!!!!

Thank you all again for the love, hugs and support. AT least I can go out to the barn without bawling my eyes out. I don't really have any "good" news to report, but I'm pretty positive I know who the culprit is. ...exactly who I suspected. That guy down the road with his dogs running loose. I caught one of them red handed this morning sneaking across the front field heading straight for the barn! I just have to figure the best way to handle this. I live alone and this guy is not one of the most pleasant human beings. I don't want any trouble from him, especially if one of his dogs "goes missing",if you know what I mean. I DON't want to have to take drastic measures, but I WILL do what I have to to protect my animals.

Anyway, still no sign of the missing chickens. But, on a slightly happier note, Gretel is still hanging in there. I finally got her to drink some water, but she still won't eat anything. I've tried most of her favorite treats, but she just turns her head.

I am soooo sorry for your loss. My prayers to you as well. I feel your pain. No matter what the dog owner may/may not do, it can't help with your pain and loss.

I am going to sound like a bad person here, and I am really sorry to say this. I am speaking from reality and experience with the same situation last winter. Once the dog has done this they will be back again and again unless you are able to do something to interfere. It would be nice if the rocksalt pop from a 12g always worked. In my case it didnt. I had called the dog warden and had proof of the feathers, dead bird etc. right up to the owners door step. The warden said all that he could do was issue me a 'lost livestock' report and have the owner pay for the bird. wow, $1.50. I did ask the dog warden for laws and regulations of what I am allowed to do if the dog returned.

The dog did, and I dispatched of it. No more dog, no more dead pets and heartache from losing my babies. I hated to do it, it broke my heart, but i had to protect what was mine. It stinks that dog owners are so irresponsable and that the dog has to suffer in the long run. I am so sorry if this sounds heartless.

I'm so sorry to hear about your troubles. Have you got some vitamins+electrolytes you can add to the water for Gretel? I hope your missing chickens show up

If the owner of the dog is an unpleasant character maybe you should go to the Police... Loose animals causing loss of livestock is unacceptable. Unless you want to take care of it yourself, but you may end up getting in trouble.

just check with your county warden or police on the rules and regulations.

Chickens are considered livestock in most areas, and dogs without a leash are considered a nuisance or threat to your livestock on your property. You most likely will be able to get rid of the dog. Hate to say it. But as a last ditch effort.

You don't sound like a bad person or heartless at all. In fact,you sound very caring. And it IS a crying shame that innocent animals must suffer because of irresponsible owners. I'm going to call the warden in the morning to find out what rights I have here. Thanks for suggesting that....I didn't think of it. And you're right....How can you put $1.50 price tag on what is in your heart? THAT is heartless.
