We have a two-week-old baby chic that is sick. We are calling her "Hope". She is mouth breathing and sounds congested. She makes whining noises and sneezes all the time. Currently she does not want to stand but I think it is because she is exhausted from being up all night trying to breath. She runs around with the other chic's when in the brooder, she lays down with them, but when she breathes her whole-body moves like she is struggling.

Last night we gave the chic 0.25ml of poultry cell in hopes that it would help her. She did not fight us at all and took it again this morning with no problem. We also gave her some water through the same syringe, which she gladly took. She still sounds so congested. My daughter was able to pull some stuff from her mouth with tweezers a bit ago but I'm not sure what it is. At first, I thought it might be gapeworm, but I am not that familiar with it. Can someone tell me if this is what it is? And if it is what I should do?

Welcome To BYC

How is your chick doing?

I'm not sure what you pulled from inside her beak. It is like downy or hair or more like mucous?

She may have some more material inside the beak or airway, I'd try looking again. Hard to do with a tiny squirmy chick.

Unfortunately she passed last night but now we have another chic showing the same signs. So we cleaned out the brooder and immediately quarantined her to a box next to the rest of the chics. We gave her poultry cell and she was not a happy camper last night. She tried with all her might to fly out of the box to get to her friend's. She's a fighter for sure. All night she was very vocal. I can't tell you how heartbreaking and stressful this is operating in the blind. I'm also at a disadvantage because I just had a double mastectomy and I'm trying my best navigate with little mobility.

:hugs I'm so sorry you're having to go through this and losing the little chick too.

When you can, get some photos of the chicks and your brooder setup.

Could the chicks be ingesting something that is in the feed or brooder? Do you have grit available for them?
