As in my previous post; I really need some advice

My chicken went off her food last Saturday and has not eaten since.

Her crop is like a balloon, so a couple of days I gave it a massage and she vomited.

She barely moves during the day and is so skinny. Her feathers look good.

I took her to the vet yesterday who seemed to have no idea about chickens. He gave me antibiotics and another drug to help bring her temperature down.

She actually seems worse today than any other.

He said not to vomit her while on the drugs, but her crop seems so full. She keeps drinking water but wont touch any type of food.

For the last couple of days I have put some nutri drops down her throat. Should I continue this?

Do you think I should vomit her or feed her anything different?

Is it definately sour crop, or could it be something else?

PLEASE HELP! I AM A NEWBIE AND ONLY HAD HER 3 WEEKS!

I don't know what it is, but just want to do something to help. I don't want to cause her excess stress as she is so weak.....

Any suggestions out there?

You really aren't going to like this, and I'll probably get a lot of flack over it but...

Let her die or put her out of her misery, and buy a new chicken.

Look at it this way; How much was the vet bill? How much will a new chicken cost you? Cost vs. benefit.

Now that he's put all the money INTO taking her to the vet she's a pretty expensive chicken. My advice would be to follow your vet's advice & maybe call your local poultry association or NPIP office. Often times they can give you better advice on sick birds than can a vet or they can point you to someone who CAN give you the advice.

I am a big softy and I know I shouldn't really have taken her to the vets. The cost wasn't too bad though!

She is just skin and bone apart from her crop now. I just touched it this morning and she vomited watery liquid. I have given her anti biotics and some yogurt mixed with biocarbonate, nutri drops and garlic.

I was surprised she was still alive this morning. I went to fetch her in last night and she was gone from her isolated pen.... Somehow she'd found the energy to jump 2 fences and join the others in the coop!

However, her poop is now a deep green colour which can mean several bad things, so I dont hold up much hope. Will give her more yoghurt mix later.

I am in the UK so not sure if we have NPIP offices or anything....will check

Any other suggestions are very welcome.

Emily

Of course you should have taken her to the vet if you wanted to do everything for her, theres nothing wrong with being " a big softy"

I like to think if I took a chook to our vet and they weren't sure what to do they would consult with a specialist, our vets has various specialists within the practice. I do hope your hen pulls through, keep up the TLC X

If she found the strength to jump the fence then that's a good sign, however, depending on what the actual issue is, it may not be a good thing for the rest of your birds. If they have access to lots of long grass she likely has an impacted crop/gi22ard which there isn't much help for once it reaches the top of the intestines. Caught early, the clog can sometimes be massaged back up thru the crop & esophagus by turning the bird upside down & gently massaging the mass back up her throat. You have to allow her rests to breathe too tho. If an impaction isn't caught early, it's pretty much fatal unless you can find a vet knowledgable enuf to do surgery. Even after surgery, the bird will still have digestive issues & tend to be weaker than the others. If it's NOT an impaction, the antibiotics, yogurt, some unpasteuri2ed apple cider vinegar added to the water and general TLC may eventually pull her thru depending on what the actual problem is. I would also add vitamins & electrolytes to her water as well.

I think she's hanging on by a thread now. I think the antibiotics are useless and anything I put down her throat sits in her crop until I vomit her agsin.

Do I keep doing what I'm doing, or just let nature run its course? Or get our neighbour to send her to sleep?

She was my favourite from the start so I am emotional, and need impartial advice to tell me what to do!!!
