I bought 12 newborns a few months back. When six were fully feathered we moved them out to a coup. The neighbors dog after two weeks decided to eat them. We still have six inside, that are fully feathered, but I am not ready for them to move out.

Now here is the problem. We bought 18 chicks and 2 roosters, all a few days old, Thursday. Yesterday we woke, and found two dead. This morning two more chicks were dead. Tonight when I got home from work, two more were dead. I just don't know what's wrong. All the ones i purchased the first time were from Tractor Supply, this time from a breeder. I haven't done anything different. They are in their own tub, fresh water at least twice daily, starter food the same, same heating lamp, same area raised, same wood shavings. What could possibly be wrong? Perhaps they were purchased with illness?
Please help. What should I do? I don't want to lose any more.

Their poo seems red tinged and runny compared to previous. They seem to be having trouble breathing. One was sounding like hiccups. I gave them a lid full of Sav·A·chick, just in case. They seem to act perfect, then almost immediately struggle to breath, stumble, lay down, and pant while jerking their body forcefully until dying. I'm still new at this. The first batch were my first ever, and they grew perfectly without any problems. It hurts to see them struggle.

Quote: This is a sickness. I forget the name but it is contagious. Get them away from your other birds. Post this description of their poo to the medical emergency forum. You need help to defeat this.

Meantime, get some Poultry Nutri-Drench , available online and at Tractor Supply. 6.99 for 4 oz. bottle. Very concentrated, a little goes a long way. It is a top notch emergency nutritional supplement. Good for chicks that are sick because it does not need to be digested, Shunts directly to the bloodstream. 50% uptake in 15 minutes. Give each chick one single drop by mouth and put in their water at 4cc per gallon. If that taste is too sweet for the chicks, you can use 2cc per gallon with success. http://www.bovidr.com/poultry.html

They have coccidiosus. Red tinged poo has blood in it, caused by coccidi, which is a intestinal disease for birds. It is contagious, so keep them separate from other birds. Go to TSC and get Corrid powder. It is in white bag with red lettering. It does not say anything about using it for chickens but it does work for them. One teaspoon of Corrid powder per gallon of water. Also get the probiotic powder packets for chickens and add this to the water. Keep giving them nutra drench as the other person advised as well. This sounds like a pretty bad case, so be prepared to loose some more. Another good thing to do along with the corrid treatment, is get plain yogurt and a small syringe and squirt some in their beaks. Hope things soon go better for you ! This disease came from the farm that you purchased the chicks from.

You could -- but they will most likely deny it - or they may be unaware of it. The same thing happened to me and the really sad thing is once you have coccdi introduced to your ground it stays there. My best advice would be to either get rid of the chicks. Do not let them on your ground or in a coop or chicken house. Destroy anything that they came into contact with. It is sad. Maybe the person will give you your money back.. ?
