I traded my 4 nearly laying aged hens for 4 two month old lavender orpingtons. That was on 8/3.

Got the lavenders home and put them in the coop my 4 prior girls used. Didn't clean anything out.

Now 2 of my 4 lavenders are tired- a lot. Fall asleep standing up, keep one eye closed more than the other. But not constantly closed. Have intermittent liquid poo and one has a slightly puffy eye.

Started them today on VetRX as in I put some on all their eyes and under the wings. Also put electrolytes in the water. Boy did they drink and drink!

Treating them all as they're all a bit more tired acting than what healthy 2 month olds should be. Regularly thru the day they're all in the coop napping. What really alarmed me today tho was after a nap, all but 1 left the coop to forage. One pullet stayed in to sleep. After I fed her 2 live june bugs tho, she left to join her flock.

Thinking about starting them on corid. Should I? Is that too much to do?
They're not droopy in the tail and dont have blood in the stool. But something is definitely off.

Please advise. These are my dream breed chickens!

ETA- the previous owner of the lavenders did say something about them being slightly sick acting, but that he treated them with oregano and basil. Hard to understand exactly as there was a language barrier. But they have seemed to decline since being in my care.

You can try corid but it may be a disease triggered by the stress of a new environment.
All I can quickly get my hands on is corid in a pellet form. They're out of all other kids.

Not sure if that would even work.

ETA- ordered some powder corid that should be here tomorrow. I guess it won't hurt to treat them with it.

Take the Corid pellets back and use the Powdered Corid that will arrive tomorrow instead.

Slightly puffy eye(s) and keeping eyes closed, lethargy and the mention that the previous owner said they had been slightly sick acting - can you take them back?

I understand the excitement of getting new birds, but it seems like you were sold/traded sick birds.

You can treat with Corid for Coccidiosis, but the symptoms you describe may very likely be respiratory disease instead. Corid is not an antibiotic, so if you are dealing with something like a bacterial illness, you'd need an antibiotic. That would be the pits to start off a new flock this way.

Liquid Corid dose is 2tsp or Powdered Corid Dose is 1 1/2tsp per gallon of water given for 5-7 days as the only source of drinking water.
Do not add any extra vitamins/electrolytes that contain B1(Thiamine) to food or water during the course of treatment.

I agree, take the sick birds back but my advice is to arrange to get a cash reimbursement for them, do not take your original birds back. Unfortunately, they have probably been exposed to whatever these lavender birds have. I'm so sorry.
