My hen Polly is an old chicken.
Has had a difficult time laying eggs in the past
Straining hard to push something out--When I look at her vent I see red fleshy stuff trying to be pushed out.
Is she egg bound or prolapsed?
Thank you and please reply ASAP!

We've also found several fairy eggs around the coop before. Might have been layed by her.

When one of our Easter eggers gets egg bound her vent gets prolapsed every time, that's usually our giveaway. We have even had to take her to the vet several times to have her put under anesthesia and then they pull them out as she gets so severely fatigued and weak from pushing for so long.

I would put a glove on (optional) put your finger in some olive oil and stick it in her vent, you should be able to feel an egg there if the prolapse is due to that.

What we do now as soon as we notice (ours is a repeat offender but my favorite so she's worth it!) is soak in an epson bath for 20 minutes, then dry her off a little, we stick our finger in he vent and coat the egg in olive oil a little the put her in a covered crate inside.

We also give her a liquid NSAID and liquid calcium, but these were prescribed from our vet so we have them on hand. They need the calcium to give them the strength to push. Someone may have an over the counter rec for you.

As soon as she gets the egg out her vent goes back in!

So so sorry for your girl- I hope she gets better!

Thank you so so much.
I'm going to bring her inside now. She's a little bantam, d'Uccle.
Would putting vaseline on the tissue help?
She hasn't actually got anything hanging out of her. The fleshy stuff she's trying really hard to push out keeps going back in in between her pushes. She's gone up to roost now, still pushing.

I don't know about Vaseline with un natural ingredients in it- I think an edible natural oil like olive or coconut would be best! It probably wouldn't hurt if you wanted to put some on the rim of it just to give her a little lubrication!

Hey, I'm @PollyGirl21 's sister, we were inspecting her and...she is suddenly acting...fine? Like she wasn't straining or shaking or waddling around or puffing up like Polly reported before. Vent looked fine. Didn't appear to be sick at all. Couldn't find any eggs or traces thereof in the coop. Can a vent just...un-prolapse? I don't know how to say it

So strange! But happy she is acting normal! I don't see a reason why it couldn't- ours does after she lays so makes sense.

I wonder is she just had a poop that she was struggling to get out?

I'd just keep an eye on her the next couple days!

Thank you so much for your help--I really, really appreciate it.

I definitely will keep an eye on that silly bird. I can never figure that old girl out!
