Hi there, I found this exact same sore on my chicken today. It's above her vent Under her tailyes i have had the heat lamp on it didnt really snow this last winter just rainy chilly and a few flurrys but it got kinda warm out so once in a great while i would turn it off. i dont know if he has been sick but he shivers even if its warm out, he gets cracked corn with wheat and these red balls all mixed together he eats it, he gets out and scavanges alot. i was thinking of four possibilities 1.) a spider bite, 2.) a nervous habit because he sleeps with his head in his wings maybe a nightmareor 3.) a tumor, and maybe 4.) a old wound that never healed.

his poop is green with a white cap (normal) and sometimes carmel coloring he has had for a long time.he sneezes every once in a while and i believe when he was a baby he had a upper respitory infection, no lameness or discharge, and he doesnt peck at it. the first picture is of the festering issue at hand it is close to his oil gland and is on his left hind quarter and the second picture is of him showing how small he is. thank you for your help.
