Background: I had 5 hens. They were all raised from chicks together and have always got along. The head hancho hen (Big Mama) was in charge. Early this summer she got out of the coupe and got eaten by a racoon
. We reinforced the coupe so none of the others could get out but now...
Current Problem: There is now one hen that I have that keeps attacking of of the others. The attacker (Gingie) is singling out the one hen (Thing 2) so much so that Gingie wasn't letting Thing 2 eat or drink and Thing 2 got sick. We have gotten Thing 2's health back up. We had to separate her. The other two hens (Thing 1 and Blackie) got along fine with Thing 2 and Gingie. We now have separated Gingie into a large dog crate (she has food and water and a perch and we put padding on the floor so no worries about abuse!) but every time we try to let them all out together, Gingie, either immediately or eventually (changes every time), goes right for Thing 2. Every time she does this I put her back into the crate and leave the other hens to go about their business in the yard. I am worried because winter will be here soon and we live in western NY so it's going to be cold! And I don't want them to be separated so they can all stay warm together. And honestly I just want them all to get along. They have a huge coupe and a 11'X12' fenced in pen that connects to the coupe and we cover with straw or hay so they are not lacking space. They never run out of food or water and the coupe is cleaned regularly. Does any one know of something we could try to get Gingie and Thing 2 to get along?
