Please Help....I understand if this thread is moved...

Thanks for all the help everyone!
I tried giving her a cheeseburger earlier today. I know McDonalds is horrible for everyone...but sometimes, very rarely...it's a nice treat I guess....
She wouldn't even lick the stupid thing.

Last night we did the chicken and rice thing and that was also a no go.
I guess I just have to keep forcing her to eat....make sure she stays hydrated...
My poor girl...
I wish I could fix her right up.
She's always so full of barks and "throw my ball or I'll bark some more!"
My dogs have no manners...but they are all good dogs...
I'll try some other red meat in the morning.
She didn't want the liver raw or cooked or pureed....but that was just too bad...because she got a few syringes full of it...
I'm going to let her rest for a bit before I bother her any further. She could probably use a decent amount of sleep....

And no, she was not poisoned. She can't get to anything like that. My neighbors are weird, but I don't think they would hurt my animals....they are just....kinda crazy.
It's crazy how quickly this hit her. The vet said it's common for dogs with weak immune systems to fail quickly when they reach a certain age.
We had her blood tested and they looked for toxins....
Just a low red blood cell count. It's sad because her immune system is killing her.....and it's supposed to help her...I'm supposed to help her....and it's not going so well.

Why does this stuff have to happen!?

You are an awesome doggy mom. I can't think of a single thing to do that you aren't doing. Your dog is so blessed to have ended up with you. I hope she can pull through for you!

I would be willing to donate blood from my 2 y.o. GSD for her to get a blood transfusion. That is what she needs. I think it may be the only thing that will save her. I can get the blood taken at my vet and have it shipped to your vet. Would that help?

So sorry your pooch isn't doing well. Sounds like you're doing everything and then some for your pup. THere is this product called i26. You can check out the clinical studies on www.hyperimmuneegg.org it supports the immune system. It doesn't interact with any meds either. I've given it to myself, horses, dogs, cats,chickens...good stuff. Good luck!

Thank you for the thought. My whole family thanks you. We have 3 other dogs...the vet kinda talked us out of it...saying she would need it again and again.
I appreciate your kindness...I really do.

Sadly, this morning....she passed....
Everyone was with her....
My Dad is building a box for her now.
She was a great dog.
Thanks for all the help from everyone and the kind words....

Very sad the day that you lose your best friend. Im sure everyone here knows the pain you are suffering and at least you did what you could and gave her the best life possible and that is all anyone could ask for.

At the moment, my dog is going through something similar to yours, although her blood count is not quite as low. At 13%, the vet was very surprised that she is not completely lethargic. At 6%, I'm actually surprised that you dog is still alive.

We were able to have more tests performed (and THAT has cost a huge bundle, with no definitive answers as to the cause). Several CBCs with extra panels, something called a Tennessee panel, xrays and a couple of ultrasounds (one significantly more detailed with a more advanced machine and by a specialist vet). The CBCs actually tell a lot more about what is going on than just the count of red cells. They will give indications as to whether the blood is or is not being regenerated, whether the size and shapes of the cells are normal or abnormal. There are a lot of causes for anemia, particularly in an older dog, and cancer is a leading cause. Internal hemorage is one possibility, bone marrow problems are another, hormone imbalances & parasite-borne illnesses (she specifically mentioned tick-borne diseases) are others.

That your dog's white cells are killing the red cells is also diagnostic in determining cause (not happening with my dog, so I don't know details about where you would go from there to determine treatment).

What my vet told me is that transfusion will not solve the problem--it will temporarily HELP with symptoms. For example, if surgery is needed, a transfusion beforehand will boost the red blood cells and significantly lower the risks of surgery. Dogs, like people need blood compatible donors for transfusion. Without determining the CAUSE of the anemia, and treating it will do nothing long term. Since the white blood cells are killing the red ones, it will only be a matter of time before they kill the red cells in the transfused blood.

She also told me that dogs do not tolerate iron supplements well. I will say that I have upped her food to a very high protein level and am giving her lamb liver treats (she is allergic to beef).

We have not determined a cause, and the next test (bone marrow) is very expensive and painful. For the moment we are treating with doxycycline and will redo the hemocrit in a few weeks. Her gums do not seem quite as pale, although still not nearly a healthy pink.

Ask your vet about treatments that may help and are unlikely to hurt--that is probably less expensive than testing.

I very much understand what you are going through--we've had Tessa since she was 6 weeks old 11 1/2 years ago.
